Personal narratives are written in 1st person point of view and include emotional responses. This means the essay can include the pronouns “I,” “we,” “us,” or “me.” Expository – designed to explain information or convey an explanation of a process. Expository writing is written in 3rd person point of view and excludes emotions. This means the essay cannot include the pronouns “I,” “we,” “us,” or “me.” Persuasive – created to convince the audience of a position or point of view on a topic, action or issue. The position or opinion is defined and defended using evidence. Comparison / Contrast – identifies and illustrates the similarities and differences among two or more elements. Analysis – connects and analyzes cause/effect, results, impact, significance, achievement, or validity. Research – uses a collection of primary and secondary sources to illustrate and defend a position. Point of View of Persona – written from the point of view of a character, person in history, object, etc. Explanation/Process – provides summary information or chronological explanation of a step-by-step process. Introspection – reflects on individual or collective progress, through comparison of beginning to the end of an experience; can reflect growth, achievements, accomplishments, recommendations for further growth.
